Auschwitz and Wieliczka Tour

Dates of Auschwitz and Wieliczka Tour:

EVERY DAY EXCEPT: 1ST JANUARY, 27TH JANUARY, EASTER SUNDAY, 25TH DECEMBER.

Duration: approximately 10 hours, including journey from Cracow and back

Itinerary of Auschwitz and Wieliczka Tour:

The former Nazi concentration camp - Auschwitz Birkenau is located in the city of Oświęcim, around an hour away from Cracow. The Auschwitz I Camp was established by the Nazi Germans in 1940 in former barracks of the Polish Army. Today its buildings house a Memorial Museum, in which the history of the Second World War, the Holocaust and persecution of ethnic minorities is told.

We will enter blocs number 4 and 5 that contain items found by the Red Army, whose troops liberated the camp on January 27th 1945. These items include: adult and child shoes, glasses, Jewish liturgical parchments, prosthetic limbs, cookware, suitcases, baby care items and human hair, as well as shoe paste from different countries. Continuing, we will see the patio with the Death Wall where prisoners were executed. Then, we will proceed to adjacent bloc 11 with subterranean cells, where in September of 1941 Cyclone B gas was used on six hundred Soviet prisoners of war and 250 Poles.

In the cell number 18, Father Maximilian Maria Kolbe spent his last days, after offering to be sentenced to death by starvation instead of a father of a family. The pope prayed in this cell in 1979 and left a commemoratory candle. We will walk through the Counting Square, where prisoners were counted every day. There, the prisoners witnessed the execution of their comrades. Later, we will enter the provisional Crematory number I. It was used by the Nazi Germans until 1943. Transfer to the Auschwitz II Camp. There, we will pass under the Death Gate and enter barracks made from wood and red brick. Furthermore, we shall walk through the selection platform and afterwards we will reach the International Monument. It is dedicated to the Victims, it is situated between the ruins of Crematories I and III. Return to Cracow.

The famous Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the oldest salt mines in the world. Its history traces back to 13th century, to the times of prince Boleslaus the Shy and his wife, Saint Kinga. The mine was appreciated by UNESCO and in 1978 it was included in the first World Heritage List.

During the visit, we will descend to explore a spectacular subterranean world, passing through numerous rooms and galleries. We will reach 135 meters below the surface. The most fascinating place in the mine is undoubtedly the Saint Kinga Chapel, a true masterpiece. Its authors were three miners-artists, who had created a unique ambient with statues and altars carved in salt rocks. One of the artworks is a relief representing The Last Supper, based on a painting by Leonardo da Vinci. Return to Cracow.
